Alrighty beautiful people, we are back. Virtus Performance Podcast, weekly wrap. We've slightly changed the angle, about 15 degrees difference, so those 20 people that watch on YouTube, get around it. Nah, I've looked at the stats, I reckon there's actually more jumping on YouTube these days. Starting? Starting to, yeah. Good, I like it. Get on. It's probably about even, and I anticipate it will overtake. Oh, that's good. I'm a big video watcher on the podcast. Big video watcher, a big podcast YouTuber watcher. Whereas two years ago, or Spotify. And I think what skews the stats is
like you can rack up multiple, like one person can rack up multiple views on YouTube, whereas like, yeah exactly, whereas like on Spotify you can download it once and that's it, so it's probably a truer representation of the Spotify downloads, whereas YouTube can, yeah. So for the audio connoisseurs out there, get on the visuals. The ice creams. Fuck. Probably best ice creams. Actually there's an ice cream that's overtaken that. The drumsticks, double choc, mini boy. They're so good for those playing at home. Oh dear. Knocking back like chips, potato chips. But that's the thing, you just have one, and then on the days you're really hungry you have two.
Mitchell, back in the seat, as a few. Yeah, nice to actually be up on the ground, off the ground. Bit of stitch up, which we love. Yeah, huge stitch up. You knew I was coming, still put me on the floor. What was your plan going in actually? I didn't fucking have one. I didn't think you'd make it. I said I'll be here just after 11.15, start if you need to. Yeah. To him. And we started five minutes late, so that's fair enough. That's our fault. How are you? How's the week been? Tell us good things. How's the week been?
Busy. Got home the earliest I got home this week last night at 8.30, so that's how my week's going. What did you do? Oh, just lots of things. Just, yeah. Couldn't even put it down to five things. Just an accumulation of things. How was your run club yesterday? Fill us in. Yeah, we went up to Albert Park and did the MS walk run roll. What did you do? I did the 10k run, so did Tess and Kat. Your sister did the 5k run. Howdy girl. And the rest of your family did the walk, I believe. Correct.
So yeah, we got that done. I had a bit of a mishap, about 6.5k in, needed a bathroom break, and then about 8.5k in. Did you see yourself? I really did though. And then needed an 8.5k stop as well, so that blew the time out a little bit. What's the name for it? There's a name for it if you shit yourself during a marathon. Yeah, I can't remember what it is. It's good though. It's a really good name, so Google it. Look it up. Isn't it just from like, osmosis or something? From like so many, so much cars?
No, I understand why it happens, but there's like a colloquial name for if you shit yourself during a marathon. I just don't know what it is. I think it's a hit in the wall, but that's when you like run out of fucking fuel. Could have been the electrolytes I had in the morning. Could have been the Korean barbecue I had that night. That'll probably do it. But I felt shit all day, so it wasn't probably not the electrolytes, but made it through. Heartbreaking. Just. Heartbreaking. A little scare. Not enough toilets on the Albert Park, I'll tell you that much.
Yeah, it's um, needing the bathroom during a long run. I mean 10k's not too bad. Ah, it's so uncomfortable. Yeah, it's yuck. So yeah, that blew the time out a little bit. When KP and I did the Melbourne Marathon, that 28k toilet stop was like, just waddled in. Euphoria. And just bounced back out like a kangaroo, it was gorgeous. Euphoria. Exactly. Euphoria. I used to be euphoria. What else? Anything else? Nah, we uh, last week, not really to be fair. Just kind of, yeah, just kind of moulds into one. I feel like last week, the last two week has.
Can you cut into you, which we love? Yep, yep, you'll find out about that next week. I only just found out today, it's fucking huge. Next week's job? Yeah, next week's job. Got to sign on the dotted line first. Got to lock that away. I'm too close to the plants. Um, yes, very exciting. Huge news, huge news. It's uh, yeah, very, very happy with this procurement. Wonderful human. Yes. One of the best. Long time, nah, I'm not even going to say it. Shout out. What about you Frosty? Just leave him on the hook. Last week? Yeah, last week.
Four more days? Four more days to go. Shit. I'm actually organised. I can't wait to get your fucking ball of stress out of the country. Packed. Oh man, it's going to be so much happier. The ball of stress out of the country. I'm crazy man. You're being a little stressed. Packed. Ah, nah, I've said this to a lot of people. I won't be stressed until Thursday I don't think. For now I'm. Solid self-awareness there, which we love. So what else have you got to do? You're packed? Yeah, packed. Essentially? I've got my socks, which I've mostly done.
Do it once around. Make sure they're all actually printed off. Got your laptop ready to go? Lapis ready to go. Jazzy's laptop? Yeah, Jazzy's laptop. Yeah, most of the shit's already booked and paid for. Beautiful. Just a handful of things I've got to buy. Other than that. Ready to rock. I went to Hamilton on the weekend. First time since Christmas. How was the time? Oh, the first 48 hours I'm there. Because I don't go there much anymore these days. Yeah. First 48 hours I'm there. It's actually lovely. Good to be back. Catch up with everyone. Yeah, go for walks and just trip down memory lane.
And then buy-- And you realize there's nothing else there. Hour 48 to 72. By day three, it's like, time to get out. Realize there's nothing else to do? Yeah. Walk all the roads? No, literally. I always have this thought, which I'm never going to do. But like, fuck, I could open a gym here. Athlete development sort of target demographic. There's just nothing like that in the area or anywhere else. I don't even think Warrnambool, which is like the next biggest city. I'm like, fuck, it'd be such a good place to do it. And then spend a weekend there.
It's like, nah, not happening. So far away from everything good. It's just like weekends. Like Sunday, I went for a walk and it's just dead. Just desolate? It's desolate, yeah. And it's worse in winter because all the trees are like dead and all the leaves and shit are on the ground. So sad as well as desolate. Yeah, it's fucking grim. I had a request for a Virtus Shep yesterday. A what? Virtus Shepperton. Oh, right. Absolutely not. Nah. Won't see me there. Absolutely not. My open one will send Tyler there. Nah. Do FIFO. Week on, week off.
Could do. If you're paying for travel, absolutely. I could do that. Yeah, I'll pay the $90 to get there on the Hume. Yep. Done. Yeah, good. So any other news? Considering you're just wrapping everything up, right? Just wrapping up. Lot of work boxes to tick this week, which temper expectations with that one. There's a lot to do, but I'll do my best. I will not temper expectations. You are ticking those boxes. It happens. I don't care if you don't sleep between now and Friday. You want to go to Europe for three months, you've got to tick those boxes.
Good try though. I like to try. Lot of time on the plane to tick boxes though. It's true. How long are your flights? Did you get good news? First one, eight hours. And then I go to like a little two hour one and then 12 hours overnight. Oh, that's pretty good. 6.30 AM, landing in Paris. That's easy. Charles de Guel. So what's the, what does the first two weeks look like? Five days Paris, French open tennis. Is it a Louvre? Yeah, going to the Louvre. Love that, Louvre that. Walk out the Eiffel Tower. I lined it up and I fucked it.
Catacombs, go see six million corpses. Yeah, good. And then just hang out. I'll probably still have a little bit of work to do. So I might craft out two or three hours one morning and just smash that out. And then just walk around, cafe time, do a wine tasting. Paris will be on my own. So just chilling and then London from there. Yeah, good. You've obviously been pretty training focused over the last like six, 12 months. What does the next three look like and how are you going to adjust your training to being... A lot of running.
Actually, not a lot of running. A little bit of running because I don't want to cook myself. I do a lot of running. I'll be fucked. Lower shank issues. Yeah. Yeah. One or two running sessions a week. A lot of walking. A handful of body... I'll tell you what, I'll be making the most of the free seven-day trials at gyms. Smart. Hammering that. Yeah, last two or three weeks has already been pretty inconsistent and then I hit a 200 kilo PB the other day. If I can come back from Europe still about 80 kilos, I think I'll be in a good spot and I think I can do that.
This is the beautiful thing about strength. What's it saying? Strength is loyal. It just hangs around. Yeah, that's right. But it's almost frustrating because if you didn't train for a couple of weeks and then you were 20 kilos, 30 kilos down on your lifts, you'd be like, "Fuck, I need to get training." But, and this is something I've fallen into the last couple of years, you just go pick up a heavy deadlift or hit a heavy squat or hit a heavy bench and you're like, "Oh, I'm still good. I've still got it." Whereas you're going further away from maybe the body composition targets you set.
Yeah, that's exactly right. Like the targets you want to hit, you probably realistically, the targets I want to hit realistically do need to be training four or five days a week. But it gets to a point where that's just not feasible or it's just not really the goal that you want. So you sacrifice that. Being an adult, just being able to adjust and modify your priorities based off what's most important at the time. And sometimes training needs to take the backseat, especially when you're traveling the world, going to the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe and whatnot. My friend works at a strongman gym down in Hartford or up in Hartford.
So I'll go and throw some logs around and do the yoke. Careful with that back. Farmers carries. Now we're good. In the clear. Once it's never good again. Now we're in the clear. Ask him about his calves. No, my calves are good. That's my point. Killers is a bit sore though. What about you? How's your training going? Fine. Yeah? Got no- 75 hard things? What are you up to? I think I'm 57 today. Good. Two and a half weeks left. You haven't erred? No. No? No, I'm really being close, to be honest. Good. Yeah, it's been pretty straightforward.
I'm not going to miss my 10pm walks though. Okay, I am. You're not going to miss them? No, I fucking really liked them. You know, walking around the streets of Kringle gives you a little bit of an extra heart rate boost, so the adaptation's a bit more- I think I said this last week. It's just one of my favorite parts of COVID was those late night runs and walks. Yeah. It's bliss. It's gorgeous. Speaking of walks in COVID, I went through Ballarat, because whenever I go to Hamilton, which is, again, really, I always de-tour Ballarat and take the extra 10 to 15 minutes to go past my old houses, just see who's living there, what they've done with the place.
And we had a forest, a big reserve over the road from my house, and it was like 8am in the morning when I went through Ballarat, and it was a typical freezing cold, but calm Ballarat morning. And what we'd do every morning in COVID is we'd go for a big walk through the forest and the reserves, put the jacket on, went through a walk, and all these little teepees and stuff that, obviously, kids had built, still standing. That's sick. That's awesome. And this is your little nudge to get out there. Getting nature. Getting nature. Enjoy some- I don't need to get into nature that far out there.
To Ballarat, yeah. I think I'll find something a bit more local. Yeah, and nature. Just walking the grass out there. Nature can be just going, "Look at the ocean." Go get grounded. Yeah. Take the shoes off. Did that the other day. Feet off. Now, say what you want about the studies that say it reduces inflammation, blah, blah, blah. Like, it just feels good. Get your bare feet into the grass. Is this another one of his rants? Feels fucking good. If it feels good, do it. Yeah, if it feels good, do it. Another one of his rants he's gonna go on?
Yeah. Nah, I'll leave it at that. If you're on Instagram, later. Stay tuned. Nah, don't fucking get it. Actually, no, I told him to do that the other day. There'll be one about lower back pain, though, later. He was cracking the shits and I was like, "Man, if you're grumpy, if I can get on him, sir, face the camera, and just tell everyone what you think." What was that about? Stop exercise. One about, not current members, but soon to be members, just delaying the start because my GP pretty much told her to not do anything at all.
The email was, "My GP told me to stop all strenuous exercise." I'm like, "Oh, yeah, fair enough. End all physical activity, man. Come on." Motion is lotion. Moving is medicine. Exactly right. Any more- She's good for your health. It just makes you feel good. Obviously, you do it within your capacity. If you get sore here, we just live here and we play around here and we do what you can without pain and we do things that make you move better without necessarily making you sore. It's our job, but anyway. Fucking GPs. Yeah, good. I don't want to be that guy that shits on GPs.
They do a good job. That was a dumb one. Hang on a minute. Didn't you just shit on GPs? Shit on GPs. Yeah, but- Sure. Whatever makes you feel better. A lot of people love to shit on GPs. Hey, no offense, but- You should never, ever talk in absolutes, as far as I'm concerned. Yeah, I'm with you. Yeah, good. My training's going well. Thanks for asking. Actually, it's not really. It's ticking. It's ticking along. What I spoke about last week, a bit of aesthetic stuff. A bit of pipe. Yeah. Basically, I did a lower body strength session last week, some high box squats and things.
Felt good. Yeah, that's the plan for today. Boxies, a bit of bench, a bit of pipes. Pipes later in the week. Geez, that there's a sat day. Footy. Where are we rolling? Is there pipes every day? I want to, but I just haven't been doing it. Took a couple of dumbbells home, the two broken ones. Yeah, I saw that. I'll just knock those over. Potentially, gym update. I know I'm skipping the thing a little bit, but potentially gym update. We might do a gym update. What is it? Are they allowed to know yet? Yeah, it can be slow.
It can be vague. I'm not 100% sure on what we'll pull the trigger on yet, but in a nutshell, Virtus, the way it's set up downstairs, love it, but it's built for when we first opened, which was 2015, heavy one-on-one, one-on-two, really small group PT. Obviously, over the last seven, eight years, we've adjusted our model to be very heavily group training dominated for a few years, and now we've found that happy medium between groups and semi-private. Essentially, what we need to do at some stage, hopefully it's over the next couple of months, is change the
layout of the gym so that we can have clear workstations for a VGT crew, VAD crew, with the goal of then adding a third coaching stream built around rehab, unhealthy pop, pre-postnatal, things like that, which Jazzy will drive a chunk of that, which is exciting. So yeah, next couple of months of Virtus, good things happening. You might come back to a fresh new gym. I hope so. Yeah. New flooring, new turf. Is that a good run? Yeah. Thoughts? I agree. Someone made that comment the other day. I had guests in, they're like, "Fuck your turf, it's flat."
When we first got it, it was uncomfortable to lay on with skin on turf, just because it was a little bit prickly. You kind of had to have a jumper or a t-shirt or a long sleeve on. Whereas now, it's just compacted down over the years, and partly probably because we played a lot of basketball, and lots of prowler, lots of prowler and lots of basketball squishes it down. But yeah, good things happening. It's weird how there's not a single part other than the edges of the wall that's not compacted. Every single bit of it's just flat.
Yeah. But if you think the whole gym gets used outside of that 20 centimetre gap around the wall, I think it's had a good run, as much as I'd like to keep it and not spend any money. I think it's time. You think it's time? Can we time stamp that? How far are we involved? I think it's time. It's time. Hey, we might get the quote back and it'll be cool. It's time to spend money. We're leaving it. Okay. 11.46. Time to spend money. Monday, the 22nd. Yeah. 35 seconds. This is my job now. Resource manager.
I've got to figure out where to put the cash. Anyway. Hot topics. What have you got? Let him dwell on that for a minute. I know. Just like getting Vietnam flashbacks. I think you're up on a topic this week. What have you got for us? I will give one that I yell at Tyler for all the time. Yeah, go on. You can't wear different shoes and different socks. That's a Tommy T. Yep. Yeah, I've got Nike socks on. Don't even try. What if they're like mine right now? This is the exception to the rule. There are two exceptions to the rule.
If it's blank or a non-competing brand like Kmart and New Balance, that's okay. Lulu and Nike? Correct. For example? Yes. If it doesn't make shoes, for example, like Lululemon, that's okay as well. But you can't wear competing brands, shoes, and socks. Full stop. I'm going to run it. That's my hot topic. If they're not brandless, all my socks are just Nike. Well, maybe I should invest in some other socks that aren't Nike. Nah. For probably less of a cost. Nah. Speaking of socks. I have nothing to spend my money on. Speaking of socks, Virtus socks. Leftport, currently in the South China Sea, so get around it.
Still funny. It's still funny. Socks, fucking running caps, and totes all en route. So hopefully there's some prevailing winds and they get here quick. You're going to miss out. Sucked in. I've got my hat. I'll just miss out on socks. Might not be any left. What can you members expect in a, I was going to say recovery pack, in a welcome pack? Welcome pack. So plan is welcome pack. Some socks, you'll get a tote, you'll get a bunch of goodies from our allied health staff. So a bit of info about Fizz and a bit of nutrition stuff and ex-Fizz stuff.
Bunch of stickers, couple little bits of paraphernalia, so we've got some air fresheners coming. Podcast air fresheners. Oh right. What flavour? Scent. I can't remember actually. What flavour? Probably new car smell. Tyler will try and eat it. And you get a choice of a, you get a towel, and then you get a choice of a hat or a beanie. So adding a bit of value, get a bit of swag out there, a bit of merchandise before they get ready to buy hoodies and teas and whatnot. So that's exciting. Love it. Love that. Sure, you got a topic?
Nah, my headspace is just all... Focused. Me, me, me. Love that. Nothing's really ground my gears this week. I'm feeling, I'm feeling very anti-social media the last couple of weeks. I've been wasting so much fucking time just scrolling through shit. We didn't say that was going to happen to you. As Bruce Lee says, if you love life, then don't waste time. Bruce Lee's dead, mate. Hey, because time is what life is made of. Oh, Jesus. You too. Do you know Bruce Lee's favourite drink? What? Water. Saw that coming through. Racist. I heard that before. That was a bad joke.
I got a joke for you? Yeah. Why did the chicken go to the gym? Go on then. Because. I thought it was to work on his pecs. It is. That's good. That's two good jokes. Member shout-outs. Matty Riley, another karate tournament on the weekend, another dub. Oh, which we love. I'm going to pump up Darcy Murph, kicking, kicking, almost to kick to bag on the weekend. Kick four goals. That's a bag. If it's four or more, it's a bag. Nah, bag's five, man. Bag's five. I love my four. Nah, he's played really good for you this year.
And it's undoubtedly because of the amount of work he puts in. He's a smart kid, good footballer, but just work ethic. Whoa, hang on. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Nah, he's smart kid. He switched on. Whoa, whoa, whoa. He switched on. Four horse-y. So yeah, get around Darce. Love him. Nice to have Tice Mann back in the gym. Yes. Only needed three kicks in the ass and then he got through the door. Yeah, he's one to drop off a little bit, but he's a busy boy. Oh, he went to an event and did well and then thought, "Well, what if I actually train, then I could do better?"
He's building the peninsula. Yeah. So he's a busy boy. Soph Canning, 15K on the weekend. There you go. And she's destroying the tipping, by the way. What did that say? She's tearing it apart. I have not looked at it. I'm third and she's up on me by four. Oh. Yeah, I was a bit disappointed Melbourne didn't get up on the weekend. Boy Jakey. Oh yeah, they got done. Nah, I didn't put it in anyway, sorry. Oh fuck. We lost him for a second. I was trying to think who they were first. Upcoming podcast, one with Ben DiCiccio.
Get around it. Just released on yesterday, Sunday. Give us a synopsis. Good man, good story. So just overcoming different health battles. So we had three spontaneous pneumothorax, so collapsed lung. Usually, not usually, but if you have one, you usually have one. He's had three of them. Spontaneous. One's rare, two's unheard of, and three's... Is pneumothorax a collapsed lung or a pole in the lung? I believe collapsed lung. Yeah. Get the fact checker out. And then lifelong battle with eczema and then went through some topical steroid withdrawal, which is like topical steroids, what you put topically on your skin.
And like any drug, you stop using it and there's withdrawals. You stop having coffee, you have withdrawals, alcohol. So we had some really aggressive withdrawals from that, and he's coming out the other side, was like questioning his will to live, and he's coming out the other side, and he's healed, and he's looking good. So we talk about all that. Andy Van Der Beek, next. Yeah, yeah. And he's... Where are we? Sunday, 28th. Andy. So for those that don't know Andy, he runs an accounting firm and a coworking space. He's about to take over his dad's plumbing shop, as you do.
He was on the potty like 2017, maybe 2018, but over the last five years, he's basically gone from running this big business, building it to a point where now he's stepping back, spending time with family, and obviously looking after his dad's shop. And a really cool, I guess, look at how you can, over the course of the journey, you can decide what you want your week to look like. And yeah, he's worked incredibly hard to get to this point, and obviously will continue to work hard. But I think a lot of people look at someone like Andy and go, "That's really easy for you to do."
But yeah, we spoke about how difficult it's been for him to get to that point, and now what challenges kind of lie in him stepping back from the business he founded and all those kind of things. So yeah, it'll be out next Sunday. Then... It was a good episode. Good. And after that, we've got Chris Crianus and Jeremy Borzillo. One of them's the head coach at Woodford Sports Science Consulting, and the other one's just about to finish up coaching there to lean into powerlifting coaching. Yeah? Love that. Chris is only 21 and probably the best young coach I've ever met.
Actually, it cooks me how young he actually is. Sort of a bit like Mitch, just a lot older than... Careful. He actually is. Careful. Mitch was a young coach when he started. 30-year-old in a 21-year-old's body. This place changes you. Is it terrifying that we're a year apart? Yeah. I'm a 22-year-old in a 25-year-old's body and a 32-year-old in a 26-year-old's body. It's kind. It's kind. 42. Yeah, good app, standards of coaching, time in the US, and then just really liberal use of the C word. I had to make a few bleeps and edits. It was probably a little bit much.
Yeah, good. The country's slipping out. Yeah, and they're probably much the same as me, just a bit loose with the way we talk. So self-reflective about that. Yeah, there you go. I put my headphones on because I was like, "Fuck, I can't listen to kids fucking swearing." A couple of events coming up. So 24th of June, we have our gin and whiskey night, Australian gin and whiskeys, drinks provided, snacks provided, food provided. We're doing that at the Rumble. Tickets are 100 bucks, but if you get on before the 1st of June, you save 20 bucks. So early bird gets the worm, so to speak.
Get around it. It's going to be ripper night. Got a selection of gins and whiskeys from around the country, and I tell you what, there's some high-quality stuff in there. Andy and I are actually going to sit down and record us tasting them, talking through the tasting notes, all that kind of stuff in a couple of weeks. So yeah, 24th at the Rumble. Be there. Second event, Monkey Movement, the boys from the Monkey Movement, Locke and Sam, they're going to run a workshop for our members, or actually, workshop for our community, sorry, not just our members.
20 bucks ticket, 30 bucks if you're not a current member. That's going to be on the 2nd of July. 2nd of July, Sunday morning, I think we're going to do 10 a.m., two and a half hour workshop. We will go through some connection stuff. We'll go through some breath work, and then we'll do some cold plunge altogether. And 2nd of July, middle of winter, it's going to be a glorious day for it, I'm sure. So get around it, it'll be a good time, great opportunity to connect in the environment with some people outside of this little echo chamber right here, which we love.
Yoga, Sunday, the 29th of June, more on that closer to the day. Yes, a couple of downward dogs and vinyasas and shavasanas and whatnot. Just get me to the shavasana. Fast forward the first 45 minutes and get me 15 minutes of shavasana and I'm there. It'll be a good time. Might be there. You reckon, you reckon. Any more for any more? 18th of June, Pinshall Running Festival in Rosebud, 5, 10 and a half. Yeah, nice. And then the 16th of July is Run Melbourne. Fire out, let's come quick. 16th of July. Basically have one a month until marathon now, so.
Yeah. Virtus training run in September. Yeah, sick. Get around, get around those events. If you are thinking about running, thinking about diving into 5, 10, 15 marathon, doesn't matter. Hit up, hit us up, jump on one of Mitchie's programs and join a growing community of runners. They fought right foot. Did Tess and Ollie hit 50 k's last week? Is that what I saw? Yeah. Or Tess? Ollie not quite, Tess hit 50, yeah. Atta girl. Star. Yeah, good. Any more for you? We'll see you in three months. I'm going to Europe. Oh, thank fuck. Can you get sick here with that?
Any last words for everyone before they fucking don't hear from me for three months? They'll hear from you, but give us something. Give us some wisdom. Oh, jeez. On the spot. Take a moment. See you in three months. Have a good day.
