Being Better # 4 Give yourself a rest!

Tired? Run down? Stressed? Probably about time you gave yourself a rest.

My personal and business goal, is to be a little bit better every day, to be better than good enough (Dea 2017). I try to live and work by the mantra of focusing on improving the little things, and that if you improve 100 things 1%, you'll see 100% improvement. Here is where the "Be Better" idea came along. Each week i will be talking to a guest or two about their journey, philosophy and why they do what they do. In between these chats I will be uploading the #BeBetter series. A number of short chats aimed at improvement, for me, for you, for anyone who wants to listen. I won't be preaching, i'll be walking the path with all of you. So here goes, Episode #4 Rest. Let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions for topics, info@virtusperformance.com.

Hey guys, welcome to the Virtus Performance Podcast and another Be Better series. The Be Better series is a really short, sharp podcast, a little chat about little ways we can improve. One of the big things we push in here at Virtus and I do in my personal life is how can we do little things every day to make us that little bit better. And over a long period of time we tend to get fairly decent significant results and I guess this isn't going to be something where I sit here and preach to you, it's going

to be something that I am on the journey with you, on the voyage with you, I want to find little things that help me be better as well. And one of the things that I wanted to talk about today was giving your body a rest and I guess we all kind of overstimulate ourselves all throughout the week whether it be with training, whether it be with work, whether it be with study and I guess we all schedule things in that we would consider working out or we would consider as strenuous or stressful exercise. And I don't mean just exercise, I mean going to work and being stressed all day, that's an exercise in itself.

And I guess for me we have a lot of people that come in here at the end of the day or even in the morning and they're super tired and sometimes training is not actually going to help, it's going to hinder and I guess the way our body tends to deal with stress and that can be physical stress, emotional stress, social stress, all of the different stresses we deal with day in day out, the way our body deals with it is it just continues to surmate those stresses and they keep adding up and adding up

and adding up and eventually something cracks so that could be you're getting sick, it could be you're getting injured, it could be you're not performing on game day or not being able to think of something simple at work. We eventually end up with so much fatigue that our body just falls apart and something gives in and I guess the whole reason I wanted to have this little chat today was to try and identify when that happens, before it happens ideally. So if you start feeling a little run down, a little tired, take half a day

off, take a morning off, give yourself some regeneration time, it might be as simple as going out for breakfast or going for a walk or having an extra couple of hours sleeping and anyone that knows me knows that I probably spend a little bit too much time at work, if you spoke to KP she would say I spend way too much time at work but it's something that I struggle with is giving my body time to rest and recover and it ends up, I end up maybe getting sick or copping an injury at footy that probably shouldn't have happened because I tend to push myself a little bit hard.

Something I've tried to do lately is I've scheduled in my time in my schedule throughout the week so I call it Wallace time purely because it's that little bit of blue in my schedule that I need to make time for myself and find something that I enjoy doing and it might be heading across the road for lunch or it might be going for a walk or sitting down listening to some podcast or playing basketball at the gym, whatever it may be but it's got to be for me and I'm two weeks into really knocking that

over day in day out and it's definitely happening, I don't feel that sense of my eyes are going to fall out the back of my head or anything like that because I'm so tired and it's something that, it's only a little thing and I've only given myself maybe an hour a day if that, I probably need to find a little bit more time but it's helped immensely and for all of you guys out there that if you're training hard and you're stressed at work or studying and stressed because of that, like I spoke about in

the first Be Better podcast if those things aren't optimal and you're not optimising your stress levels and all of those kind of things then things are going to break down and you're not going to perform as well so if you can take anything out of today, all I want you to take out of it is to find time for yourself and to give yourself a little bit of rest, there's times when you need training and when you need to push hard and you need to work hard and all those kind of things but there's also

times when you need treatment and that treatment can be going for a walk or getting a massage or just having a day off and giving yourself time off training or off work or things like that. If you are I guess burning the candles at both ends and struggling with these kind of things, use a little checklist, check how you think your hydration's going, how you think your food and nutrition's going, how are you sleeping, what are the things you're stressing about, are you moving everyday, are you spending too much time at work, try and, I

use the word stock take a little bit but try and take a stock take of your life and how everything's going and see where are the little areas that you can improve to help and to make you better, there are only little things but as I've discussed at length I guess little things all the time add up into big things and big changes and it allows you to do more with the time you have because you're full of energy and full of beans and you're actually looking forward to challenging yourself and improving. That's it for

today, thank you for listening, if you have any questions or queries or if there's anything specific you want me to talk about, feel free to give me an E up, be excellent.
