The Simple Series · Part 8 of 12
Good coaching starts with paying attention.
Learn the person's name. Understand what brought them in. Find out what matters to them and what might get in the way.
Then help them take the next step.
That means clear instructions, useful feedback and a program they understand. It also means noticing when the plan needs to change.
Someone who's barely slept might need a different session. Someone who's nervous might need a little more time. Someone who's ready might need encouragement to back themselves.
Human first. Athlete second.
Knowing your stuff matters. So does knowing how much of it the person in front of you needs to hear.
Sometimes one clear cue is enough. Sometimes the most useful thing you can do is listen.
Over time, good coaching should help people understand their training, make decisions and trust themselves.
Know the person. Create clarity. Help them build confidence.
